The Debian-based Netrunner OS distribution has released its first stable release for 2023, version 23, which brings KDE Plasma 5.20 and the Debian GNU/Linux 11 Bullseye stable base.
Named “Vaporwave”, Netrunner OS 23 was released two years after Netrunner OS 21.01 was released.
Previous versions of the Netrunner operating system were based on Debian GNU/Linux 10 Buster and "wearing" Linux kernel 5.9. The new version of Netrunner OS comes with Debian Bullseye's long-term supported Linux 5.10 kernel, which will be supported with security and bug fixes until December 2026.
Of course, Netrunner OS 23 comes with a newer desktop KDE Plasma 5.20.5. KDE Plasma 5.20.5 comes with KDE Frameworks 5.78 and KDE Gear 20.12.2 software suites.
In addition to all the KDE applications included in Netrunner, the new version also brings from the latest ESR (Extended Support Release) versions of theletterFirefox browser and Thunderbird email client, LibreOffice office suite, VirtualBox virtualization software, VLC media player, Audacious audio player, HandBrake video transcoder, Pidgin IM client, and Transmission BitTorrent client.
Also included is the Steam Client for gaming, the GIMP image editor, the Inkscape SVG editor, the application digital painting Krita and AppImageLauncher, a tool for running more and newer applications available in the AppImage format.
