XKEYSCORE NSA software and Linux distributions

The XKEYSCORE spookware of the National Security Service (NSA), unveiled by Edward Snowden and as it says is capable of sniffing and analyzing virtually all data from anywhere, is available on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.XKEYSCORE

Edward Snowden, through Glenn Greenwald, said last week that XKEYSCORE "… is Linux malware, usually developed on Red Hat servers."

"XKEYSCORE is a piece of Linux software that is typically deployed on Red Hat servers. It uses the Apache web server and stores collected data in MySQL databases. File systems in a cluster are handled by the NFS distributed file and the autofs service, and scheduled tasks are handled by the cron scheduling service. Systems administrators who maintain ΧKEYSCORE servers use SSH to to them, and they use tools such as rsync and vim, as well as a comprehensive command-line tool, to manage the software.”

The NSA is a known partner in some open source projects (open source). The Xen Project has acknowledged the fact since Xen 4.5 was released.

The news that the NSA uses and exists within open source software may disappoint those who believe that software has been untainted by of America.

Those who think open source offers more transparency and freedom of movement will probably have to think again because the NSA undoubtedly has another opinion.
