One of the biggest hacks in the history of the US government (Office of Personnel Management or OPM) seems to be more extensive than the authorities have estimated.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the hackers – who US officials believe were working for China – were able to access 19.700.000 Office of Personnel Management (OPM) accounts. Each of these accounts includes a lot privacy.
The number is much higher than previous estimates that "only" 4,2 million files were leaked.
Worst of all, however, is that each account includes information about spouses, children, and social security numbers.
The Associated Press reports that 21.500.000 social security numbers may have been leaked.
Hackers broke into the network του Γραφείου Διεύθυνσης Προσωπικού το 2014, αλλά η παράβαση αποκαλύφθηκε τον Απρίλιο του 2015.
The WSJ reports that leaked accounts were not stored in encrypted form.
