2010, his vice president JOSA Mohammad Khamash παρουσίασε μια ενδιαφέρουσα δημοσίευση για το πώς το open Source – ευτυχώς – δεσπόζει στο World Wide Web. Νομίζετε ότι το λογισμικό Ανοικτού Κώδικα φτιάχνει ακόμα τους κανόνες για τις τεχνολογίες του Internet; In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the birth of the World Wide Web, we present a new and updated infographic for 2014.
In the publication of Mohammad Khamash the 2010 about the use of Open Source on the Internet, there has been an attempt to clarify why Open Source software is the backbone of the Web, since it gives life to the infrastructure of the Web servers and in the operating systems used to run most WWW sites. After three years, Open Source is even more used and seems to be more loved by people involved in web development.
Starting with the operating systems that power the internet, GNU/Linux still dominates the market share. Based on statistics provided by W3Techs, Linux runs on more than 38,9% of all web servers. For research the same source used in 2010 was used for the data, with the difference that in 2010 it was based on the top 1 million sites, while today the data used has been expanded and the sample base covers 10 million sites.
Since many of the web servers hide their underlying operating system system (mostly for security reasons), statistics show that 28% of web servers run an operating system that can be characterized as unknown/undiscoverable. Based on the previous (2010) statistics, which showed that Linux had a percentage of 60%, we can easily see that almost all of these machines are running Linux.
Three years were enough to create a more substantial one change in Web server software, where we have a new entrant, seconded by Microsoft IIS. As you may have guessed, it is another open source web server called Nginx, and today it has 19,9% of the market share.
This was not a major loss for Apache; on the contrary, Apache's share improved and reached 61% (+ 1% from 2010). IIS now, Microsoft's web server is now left with 14,2% (-5,8% of 2010) of the market share.
With regard to website development, και από την άποψη των server-side languages, όπως την Open Source, PHP language προγραμματισμού έχει φτάσει σε ένα εκπληκτικό 81,9% (το 2010 ήταν η γλώσσα choices for 75% of websites). Java, an open source programming language, runs on almost 3% of the web, while proprietary ASP.NET has a figure that reaches almost 18%.
For most developers, writing code from scratch is not the most effective way to develop a new software, because they have to discover the wheel over and over again. They usually use ready-made libraries, frames, and in the case of web development, they often use a Content Management System (CMS).
So, during the 2010-2014 period, Open Source Content Management Systems have become even more popular. WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal hold 60,2%, 8,7%, and 5,4% of the total use of CMSs worldwide. The total reached the 74,3% of the market.
