OpenAI competes with Google with data from Google Search

As it tries to unseat Google, OpenAI is using search data from an unlikely source: Google itself. OpenAI is using Google search results collected from the web to help power ChatGPT’s responses, according to two people familiar with the situation.

Google search data helps answer questions from ChatGPT about current events, such as news, sports and stock markets, one of the people said.

OpenAI gets its data from SerpApi, an eight-year-old web scraping company that listed OpenAI as a client on its website only in May of last year. It later removed the listing for undisclosed reasons.

According to The Information , OpenAI is using data collected from Google Search via SerpApi, a web scraping service based in Austin, Texas. This data is reportedly helping ChatGPT answer real-time queries about news, sports, and financial markets, all areas where OpenAI’s internal tools are still struggling to catch up.

The revelation is particularly interesting given Google's previous stance.

Last year, Google rejected OpenAI's direct request for access to its search index to improve ChatGPT's performance, according to documents revealed in the company's ongoing antitrust dispute with the Department of Justice.

However, today, OpenAI is renting servers from Google Cloud to run ChatGPT, a clear message that business realism can trump competitive tension.
