OpenAI to release browser

OpenAI plans to release an artificial intelligence browser in the “coming weeks,” according to a Reuters publicationSources say OpenAI could integrate the Operator AI agent into the browser, allowing it to make reservations, fill out forms and complete other tasks on behalf of a user as it moves toward an “agentic” future.

As Reuters notes, the browser will feature a “native” ChatGPT interface, potentially allowing users to interact with the chatbot directly through the browser rather than using OpenAI’s website or another app.

OpenAI is also reportedly planning to use Google's open-source implementation, Chromium, for its browser, which is used by major browsers such as Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Opera.

This week, artificial intelligence startup Perplexity also released a browser that uses Chromium, called Comet, for its $200-a-month subscribers.

The browser uses Perplexity's AI search engine by default and has a built-in AI assistant.

OpenAI's upcoming browser could pose another threat to Google, which may be forced to sell Chrome under a federal antitrust ruling.

Both Perplexity and OpenAI have said they would consider buying the browser.
