Openfactory is a new service that can help you create bootable Linux images at a prompt, from a Git repository, or from a reusable “recipe.” Boot and test ISOs in VMs, implement CIS controls, develop web apps, and record application tests, as the project page states.
It sounds complicated, because it is. Let's make it simpler.
With OpenFactory, you can create a bootable Linux distribution, set up a remote server lab, or even create reusable “recipes” so you can recreate these distributions later. Once created, you can download the ISO of your operating system and boot from it.
Please note that this is a pre-alpha service, so you may encounter problems.
There are two ways you can create your distribution: Through an artificial intelligence prompt or through a selection menu.
Imagine you need a Linux distribution to do something very specific or a combination of things, and there’s nothing else like it on the market. You could spend some time building everything you need from a base (like Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, or Arch). Of course, in some cases, the pieces necessary to build what you need can be quite difficult to put together. So you might need a “recipe” that can be used by many, so that everyone on your IT team can deploy the same Linux distribution with the same set of features.
To get started you will need to sign up for an account so you can save your creations.
Once you're logged into your account, you can click New Conversation in the top left corner to describe the operating system you want. At the prompt, I typed in the features I wanted:
I want a desktop distribution with the KDE Plasma desktop, customized to look like macOS, and including tools for writing, recording, video editing, podcasting, streaming, image editing, and desktop publishing. It should have the KDE utilities, and be installable with the Calamares installer.
Although the press releases will range from very select to rare, I said I'd pass...because sometimes the editors hide.
