It all began when Harvard professor David Edwards and co-inventor Rachel Field oPhone, they electronically sent a picture which contained the scent of the American Museum of Natural History which is in Manhattan, New York at Le Laboratoire, a centre art in Paris.
In response, Parisian chemist Christophe Laudamiel sent a Parisian scent back to the museum. Essentially, this was the first "smell test" of the device the iPhone (“O” from the olfactory or olfactory).
The device uses aromatic cartridges to reproduce the fragrance at the source. The messages it sends are called oNotes, and could be used to send fragrant images.
The OSNAP mobile application can be used to combine smells of 32 with different fragrances and create 300.000 new fragrances, according to Vapor Communications, the company created by the iPhone.
At present, only pictures may contain fragrance. Scents are transmitted as text, e-mail ή tweets, έτσι ώστε να μπορούν να μεταφέρονται σε Wi-Fi hotspots. Φυσικά προϋπόθεση είναι να υπάρχει ένα οPhone για να τις αναπαραγάγει. Μια συσκευή oPhone κοστίζει 149 δολάρια μέσω της IndieGoGo. (The price will go up to $ 199 when the amount of funding needed to produce the device is secured). The device is expected to be released later this year or in early 2015.
