Ukrainian saboteur of Nord Stream in the Baltic

Almost three years after the attack on the Nord Stream gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea, the first arrest was made on Thursday night. In the province of Rimini in Italy, a Ukrainian man named Serhii K. was arrested as a suspect, according to the Federal Prosecutor General. The man was wanted on a European arrest warrant and was discovered by chance during a check, according to Italian media reports. The man was on vacation with his family on the Adriatic coast.

Serhii K. is said to be a member of a group of individuals who placed explosive devices on the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines near the Danish island of Bornholm in September 2022. The defendant is likely one of the coordinators of the operation, the federal prosecutor's office announced.

The underwater explosion caused severe damage to the natural gas connection between Russia and Germany. Russia had already stopped natural gas deliveries through “Nord Stream 1” due to disputes with Western countries over the war in Ukraine. “Nord Stream 2” never went into operation, but was operational and filled with gas.

The suspect and his accomplices are said to have used a sailboat that departed from Rostock. The boat had been chartered by a German company through intermediaries who used forged documents.

K. is accused of jointly causing the detonation of an explosive device, unconstitutional sabotage and destruction. He will soon be transferred from Italy to Germany, where he will be brought before the Federal Court investigator.
