80.000 bitcoins traveled on Friday night

Some huge Bitcoin transactions are currently taking the cryptocurrency world by storm: as announced on Saturday morning, a total of 80.000 Bitcoins were transferred from eight wallets to new addresses.

Some bitcoins had been sitting in old wallets for about 14 years. At the time, the price was in the cent range. Today, the amount corresponds to about eight billion US dollars.

Arkham, a cryptocurrency analytics platform, provided information on Bitcoin movements on Friday night . According to the report, 10.000 bitcoins worth about $1 billion were transferred to new wallets eight times. All transactions came from the same sender, but no one knows his identity.

The bitcoins that were “moved” date back to the so-called Satoshi era. The name refers to the difficult period between 2009 and 2011, the early days of Bitcoin, when its inventor, known by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, was still active in the crypto scene.

The little that is known about the transaction history has led to even more speculation. The new wallets of the transferred bitcoins use a modern address format.

Some observers therefore believe that the owner of the Bitcoins decided to transfer them. However, theories have also begun to emerge ranging from Nakamoto's involvement as the owner of the bitcoins to cybercriminals gaining control of the wallets.

This isn't the first massive multi-billion dollar move of its kind. In the largest cryptocurrency heist to date, hackers managed to make off with around $1,4 billion worth of cryptocurrencies.
