Microsoft isn't giving many details about this new feature, but it did publish a blog post detailing the change.

For those who don't know, before the new Patch Tuesday, LAPS was only available as an MSI package that could be manually downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center.

It was mainly used by IT administrators to secure local administrator accounts, the devices by connecting to a local administrator account and identities on machines connected to Azure Active Directory, among many others.

However, with the latest Patch Tuesday released yesterday, this variant of LAPS will now be referred to as “Legacy LAPS” as Microsoft has integrated the product directly into Windows. The Redmond-based company said it did so due to “popular demand” and that the new feature is now available on the following Windows SKUs:

  • Windows 11 Pro, EDU and Enterprise
  • Windows 10 Pro, EDU and Enterprise
  • Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server Core 2022
  • Windows Server 2019

There are also several new features for Windows LAPS, which are listed on Microsoft's blog.
