Arrest for phishing mails: The Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate of the Hellenic Police investigated a case of cyber fraud and filed a case against two (2) people (one foreigner and one national).
It was preceded by a complaint from a citizen, according to which unknown perpetrators, after sending him deceptive emails (phishing mails) and under the pretext that his personal passwords to online banking services had expired, managed to extract the passwords, as well as the add-on security code and make money transfers to a third party account.
The investigation of the case carried out a thorough digital investigation and analysis of the data and facts of the case, as well as correspondence with banking institutions, foreign virtual private network service provider (VPN) and telecommunications and internet providers.
From the evaluation and analysis of the data, the involvement of two (2) persons in the case under investigation was identified.
Subsequently, a team of police officers of the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate, carried out a search on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at the home of a citizen, during which a computer was found and confiscated.
The confiscated digital evidence was sent to the Directorate of Criminological Investigations for further laboratory investigation.
The case file that was formed was submitted to the competent Prosecution Authorities, while at the same time their participation in other similar fraudulent acts is being investigated, with the same course of action, against the clients of banking institutions.
On this occasion, the Cybercrime Prosecution Directorate advises citizens - internet users not to be persuaded by e-mails and to provide personal passwords (username and password) as well as the additional security code, if they are not sure that they are in a physical bank environment.
