Most of you probably don't know about Pidgin, although you should. You are going to free, open source, program that runs on Windows, linux, Ubuntu, MacOSX and can collect all your chat applications in one.

But besides the ease of having all the chat rooms in a program, it speaks Greek and is overly secure since it is open source, and has third party plugins which increase its safety. Example the plugin OTR (Off the record messaging) which encrypts all your conversations between you and a contact so that the intermediary (say Google chat) sees encrypted text.
At new version 2.10.8 Pidgin fixes about 20 user comments, and makes several improvements. Some problem with Facebook chat when it comes through XMPP has not been fixed but our company urges us to wait a little longer.
