What company is behind Bluesky?

Bluesky started more as a project than a company. In late 2019, then-Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey announced Bluesky, which was originally funded by Twitter, as an independent effort to create a new social networking protocol. bluesky n

Dorsey didn't like that the big social networks — including his own — were owned and controlled by private companies. A social networking protocol, in contrast, could serve as a technology layer upon which anyone could build a network on top of itself, theoretically creating more competition and user freedom.

Email is an example of an Internet protocol, anyone can set up an email service and send emails that can be received by people using other providers.

This project turned into an official company called Bluesky in 2021, which created a social networking protocol (AT Protocol) and the Bluesky service built on top of it. Twitter stopped funding Bluesky when Musk bought the company in late 2022. But Bluesky raised a $15 million funding round in October.

Another day, another million new people have joined Bluesky! 18M users? 🙂‍↔️ 18M friends 🙂‍↕️

Bluesky is “decentralized”. What does this mean?

Bluesky is based on AT Protocol, an open source technology that others can use as a framework to build their own social networking projects. Unlike Facebook or Twitter, social networks based on the same open protocol can interact with each other. This means that Bluesky users can interact with users on other networks that are also based on the AT Protocol.

If a Bluesky user wants to leave to another AT Protocol network, for example, they can take their followers, posts, and other data with them.

Bluesky built the AT Protocol it uses, and since then more than 100 other applications have been built on top of the AT Protocol. Initially, Dorsey hoped that Twitter would also participate in this protocol, but those plans were dashed when Musk bought the company.

It should be noted that Dorsey is no longer a member of Bluesky's team, having stepped down from the board in May 2024.

He deleted his account completely in September.

It is now managed and primarily owned by the CEO Jay Graber and is a US public benefit corporation.

This information is available to the general public. Don't be surprised if we learn that there are others "under the table".
