Beware of free Facebook Verified

Facebook he announced on Friday that it is launching a verification badge (Facebook Verified) “that shows there is a real person behind a profile.”facebook verified

“You record a short selfie video, which we check against your existing profile photos to confirm a match. The process is free and usually only takes a few minutes. Accounts must meet trust and security standards to be eligible for verification…” Once verified, your badge will appear across all the places on Facebook where it matters most: Marketplace, Dating, Groups, and Profiles to start. Over time, we’ll also add badges to Feed posts. There’s no subscription fee — you verify once, and the badge will be with you across Facebook… You’ll see the Verified badge on accounts that have completed the verification process…

“We’re launching Facebook Verified in phases, starting in select markets with plans to expand globally…” their announcement reads. “As AI makes it easier to do more on Facebook, a clear signal that distinguishes real people is essential. That’s why Facebook Verified exists: to keep the moments that matter on Facebook based on real people.”

Too good to be true, especially when you consider that nothing is free:

Facebook says it will store your selfie video for “up to 30 days” after verification, which will be a one-time process. It’s unclear what it will do with that video in the meantime, and it’s worth noting that Meta relies on user data to train its AI. Meta’s AI (and Meta in general) is a terrible offender when it comes to privacy and security, so you should seriously consider whether a verification badge (video) is worth giving up new data for. Read the privacy policy before agreeing.

Google also launched a selfie video verification feature this week, though its purpose is to prove your identity in case you get locked out of your account. Unlike Facebook Verified, which is intended to be a trust signal to other users, Google's selfie verification allows access to your entire Google account, bringing with it some additional security features.
