A new, dangerous category of financial fraud comes to light, following research by Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. that marks the evolution of cybercrime from isolated attacks to industrialized manipulation systems
The OPCOPRO case, also known as the “Truman Show Scam,” reveals how criminals no longer rely on malware or crude phishing websites, but instead construct a fully synthetic, AI-powered reality around the victim.
In this new method, perpetrators combine AI-generated digital personas, fabricated investment communities, WebView-style mobile apps in official app stores, and a staged media presence. The goal is to create the illusion of a legitimate institutional investment program. Victims don’t just receive a misleading message; they enter a staged world where every expert, every chart, and every “profit” is fake.
The Mechanism of Fraud
The scam progresses in four stages, designed to bypass skepticism and build artificial trust:
The Personification Trap: Contact is initiated via SMS or advertisements that mimic well-known financial institutions. The goal is to redirect the victim to closed groups on WhatsApp or Telegram.
A Synthetic Investment Community: Within the groups, AI-generated “experts” and members simulate an active environment with impeccable language use, professional market commentary, and staged daily profits. The constant positive reinforcement and lack of disagreement create strong social proof.
The Application – Trojan Horse: Once trust is established, victims install the official OPCOPRO app from legitimate app stores. The app, although harmless in its code (a simple WebView shell), displays fake balances generated by the server.
The Double Damage: Victims proceed with identification procedures (KYC) and deposit funds. The result is the loss of money but also the surrender of critical personal data (identities, biometrics), which are used for future frauds.
Artificial Intelligence as a Power Multiplier
The use of Artificial Intelligence does not simply replace older methods, but dramatically enhances them. It enables scalable multilingual conversations, consistent digital personas without human effort, and automated emotional manipulation. Fraud is transforming from an opportunistic crime into a repeatable system of industrialized social engineering.
