ProtonMail is a well-known privacy-oriented email service. The company is therefore accused of helping law enforcement services spy on users.
The company of course denies these allegations.
The first information about ProtonMail cooperating with law enforcement officers was provided by Stephen Walder, prosecutor and head of the cyber security department in Switzerland.
ProtonMail practices are also mentioned in the blog by Martin Steiger, lawyer in Switzerland.
ProtonMail is known to provide end-to-end encryption, which supposedly stops even the company from accessing the content of users' emails.
However, developers still have access to email metadata.
Steiger says this data can be extremely interesting and useful for both law enforcement and intelligence services.
For their part, representatives of ProtonMail published an official announcement, which states that the company does not cooperate with law enforcement officers.
According to ProtonMail, the company helps the authorities only in the case of public intervention.
