Cause: an update released by Microsoft as part of monthly security updates. It was intended to close a 2-year-old security hole in GRUB, an open-source bootloader used to boot many Linux distributions
The vulnerability, rated 8,6 out of 10, allowed attackers to bypass secure boot, the industry standard that ensures devices running Windows or other operating systems do not load malicious firmware or software during the boot process.
The vulnerability was discovered in 2022, but for unknown reasons, Microsoft patched it only last Tuesday.
With Microsoft remaining radio silent, those affected by the bug were forced to come up with their own solutions.
One option is to access the EFI panel and disable secure boot. Depending on the user's security needs, this option is not the most secure. A better short-term solution is to delete the SBAT that Microsoft pushed on your computer last Tuesday.
This means that you will still be using secure boot but will be vulnerable to attacks that exploit it CVE-2022-2601.
