Last year, its huge PyPI repository Python with pre-built software packages had recorded 235,7 billion downloads an annual increase of 57% in the number of downloads and its bandwidth.
So now Python's non-profit Python Software Foundation has an announcement.
The infrastructure manager said today that they are presenting “the first step in our plan for the creation financial support and long-term sustainability of PyPI, while providing users with one of the most requested features: accounts for organizations” (organization accounts).
Organizations in PyPI are self-governing groups, with their own dedicated, branded web addresses. Python's goal is to make PyPI easier to use for large community projects, organizations, or companies that manage many subgroups and many packages.
“We have organizations on community projects for free, forever, and on corporate projects for a small fee. Additional agreements for priority support will be available to all subscribers on payment and all proceeds will go directly back into PyPI to continue building better support and better infrastructure for all of our users… Having more people using and contributing to Python every year isn't a big deal, but it's something we should increase our organizational capacity to respond. The increased revenue from PyPI will allow it to become a staffed platform that can respond to support requests and respond to issues on a timeline that is significantly faster than our excellent volunteer team could reasonably handle.”
These new features will be completely optional. If the features for larger projects will not be useful to you, then there is no obligation to create an organization and your PyPI experience will not change.
