Today, Microsoft he said big updates for the controversial Recall feature, which was supposed to launch in June alongside the first Copilot+ PCs.
After too many criticisms for the lack of security, Microsoft has redesigned Recall and is now ready to show us how the feature will ensure that all the data it captures is properly secured.
Microsoft also clarified that Recall will be an option since the user will be able to uninstall it despite previously stating otherwise. Uninstalling Recall from your machine will remove the app and everything stored on it.
One of the biggest concerns in the original version of Recall was the fact that all of its data was too easily accessible. Now, it will all be encrypted and connected to the Trusted Platform Module. Accessing this data requires Windows Hello authorization with your face, fingerprint, or a PIN.
Additionally, Recall now processes data in a virtualization container.
In an interview with The Verge, David Weston, Microsoft's VP of Operations and Security, described the change:
We moved all the screenshot processing, all the sensitive processes into a security pocket that uses virtualization, so we put it all in a virtual machine. So when it runs it will be protected from malware.
