Record cyberattacks in Greece in February 2026

Check Point Research, the Threat Intelligence division of Check Point Software Technologies Ltd., has published the Global Threat Intelligence Insights for February 2026, revealing that organizations worldwide faced an average of 2.086 cyberattacks per week, noting an increase of 9,6% compared to February 2025 and remaining essentially stable compared to January 2026 (0,2%).

The data confirms that cyber pressure has stabilized at historically high levels. While ransomware attacks decreased year-on-year due to an anomalous campaign in early 2025, the overall volume of attacks remains extremely high, fueled by automated attacks, the expansion of digital infrastructure, and increasing exposure through the uncontrolled use of GenAI tools.

“February’s data confirms that cyber risk is not sporadic, but continuous. Even when ransomware activity fluctuates, attackers maintain consistent pressure across industries and regions — something clearly reflected in Greece, where organizations received an average of 1.660 attacks per week, a 24% increase year-on-year,” said Michalis Bozos, Country Manager for Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Romania at Check Point Software Technologies , adding:

"The most targeted sectors in our country — such as the Government Sector, Telecommunications and Consumer Goods & Services — highlight that both critical infrastructure and broader business activities are under systematic pressure from advanced and automated threats. At the same time, the uncontrolled use of GenAI tools continues to create new risks of sensitive data leakage. Therefore, the "prevention-first" approach and real-time protection with the power of artificial intelligence remain the only effective way to intercept attacks before they cause operational or financial damage."

GenAI Adoption Continues to Increase Data Leakage Risk – Education Remains Top Goal

• 1 in 31 orders to GenAI from corporate networks poses a high risk of sensitive data leakage
• The 88% of organizations using GenAI faced high-risk prompts
• The 16% of prompts contained potentially sensitive material (documents, credentials, customer data, etc.)
• Each organization uses on average 11 different GenAI tools
• The average user creates 62 prompts/month

Education remains the most targeted sector with 4.749 weekly attacks/organization ( +7% YoY).

• Government Sector: 2.714 attacks/week (+2% YoY)
• Telecommunications: 2.699 attacks/week (+6% YoY)

Regional Attack Volumes – Latin America Leads the World

• Latin America: 3.123 attacks/week (+20% YoY)
• APAC: 3.040 attacks/week (+3% YoY)
• Africa: 2.993 attacks/week (+7% YoY)
• Europe: +11% YoY
• North America: +9% YoY

Ransomware – 32% decrease year-on-year, but risk remains

In February 2026, there were 629 publicly recorded ransomware attacks , a 32% decrease from last year – mainly due to the large Clop campaign in 2025.

• North America: 57% of cases
• Europe: 17%
• APAC: 17%

The countries with the most targets:

1. USA - 51%
2. Canada - 6%
3. United Kingdom - 2,7%

Industries with the greatest impact:

• Business Services: 37%
• Consumer Goods & Services: 13%
• Industrial Manufacturing: 9%

Top ransomware groups:

• Qilin (15%)
• Clop (13%)
• The Gentlemen (11%)

In total, 49 different groups affected organizations worldwide.
