US intelligence officials have disclosed information of a plan to send Edward Snowden back to the United States to stand trial.
According to a senior intelligence official, the move is “gift” in an attempt to curry favor with President Trump, who during his campaign called Snowden a “spy” and “traitor” who deserved to be executed.
For Snowden, the adoption would mean that he would be charged with crimes under the Espionage Act that could result in a penalty of at least 30 years of imprisonment to life.
Snowden's lawyer, Ben Wizner, he told NBC News that the customer has no information about such plans. "The Snowden team has not received such information and has no concerns," Wizner said.
As for Snowden himself, he took the opportunity to point out that the planned version offers "irrefutable proof" that he is not cooperating with Russian secret services.
It remains unknown how far from the truth such a plan is or whether Russia is "committed" to the extradition of Snowden. At present the Russian representative Dmitry Peskov reports that the said report it's "nonsense".
