Open-source Roundcube webmail software "merges" with Nextcloud, a prominent open-source personal cloud software.
Enhancing the webmail capabilities of Nextcloud, Roundcube enters Nextcloud as a merger.
In 2024 Nextcloud was to invest in Roundcube to accelerate the development of this widely used open-source webmail software. Today's press release states that Roundcube will not replace Nextcloud Mail without some plan to merge the two companies in the near term.
The today's press release it also says that there will be no immediate changes for users of the Roundcube and Nextcloud software, except to look forward to improved integration and of course accelerated development in the short term.
Perhaps with this investment in Roundcube, some of the original plans years ago with the community-funded Roundcube-Next will finally come to fruition. RoundCube-Next may have raised more than $100.000 in funding several years ago, but it has failed to deliver an updated software.
