Η '2016 Secure Internet Day' is celebrated worldwide on Tuesday 9 February, with the slogan "Take action, for a better Earth! ».SID 2016 greece

Coordinated in Greece by the Hellenic Secure Internet Consultative Body, celebration and 2016 urges hundreds of organizations to participate to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.

Globally, the Safer Internet Day (SID) is organized with the support of the European Commission every February with the aim of promoting the safer and more responsible use of technologies and mobile devices, especially among young people.

The online security landscape has evolved in recent years from an emphasis on creating a "safer" web to creating a "better" web. Whether we are children and young people, parents and guardians, educators or workers in social workers or politicians, we all have a role to play.
By defending a better internet, Day is meant to encourage people to play a positive role in exploiting the opportunities offered on the Internet while providing them with the skills, knowledge and support they need to deal with any of the online risks that they may meet.

There are ways we can all contribute:

  • The children and young people They can help create a better internet by being polite and respectful of others when they are online, protecting their (and others') online reputation, and seeking positive opportunities and experiences online. They can help deal with negative behaviors by being "helpful supporters": supporting other people when dealing with online issues, taking a stand against cyberbullying, and reporting any inappropriate or illegal content they find. Above all, children and young people should be encouraged to take a stand as digital citizens of the future - engaging in discussions about the future of the Internet, and making their voices heard.
  • Parents and guardians can help to create a better internet by maintaining an open and frank dialogue with their children on their online lives. By supporting them in their personal development on the internet and helping them to cope with any problems or issues. Seeking positive opportunities to engage with their children on the internet, and helping their children find and use good quality digital content. They can help deal with negative behaviors by dealing with their child's online activity (depending on their age) and act as a positive Internet behavior model, and also by reporting any inappropriate or illegal content they find.
  • The teachers can help create a better internet by equipping children and young people with the digital skills they need for today's world, giving them opportunities to use - and create - positive online content. They can help deal with negative behaviors by supporting young people if they are having problems online, giving them the resilience, confidence and skills they need to browse the internet safely.
  • The responsible and responsible the politicians should provide the culture in which all of the above can work and thrive - for example, by ensuring that there are opportunities in the curriculum for children to learn, and teachers to teach about online safety, ensuring that parents and guardians have access to appropriate information and support sources, and that the Internet industry regulates its content and services. It must also play a leading role in governance and legislation, and ultimately ensure the safety and well-being of children and young people through effective strategies to protect them online.
