In a rare post on his blog today, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman presented his vision for the future of AI, which he refers to as “The Intelligence Age”. Among the most notable claims, Altman stated that superintelligence could be achieved in "a few thousand days".
In particular, Altman argues that "deep learning works" and can help in many areas by allowing people to "solve hard problems", such as "fixing the climate, building a space colony and reinventing all of physics". .
In a provocative statement Altman also said that superintelligence, or artificial intelligence that is "much smarter than humans", could be achieved in "a few thousand days".
"It is possible that we will have superintelligence in a few thousand days (!). It may take longer, but I'm sure we'll get there”
If we do the math, a thousand days is about 2,7 years, which is far less than the five years most experts give.
