The Samsung team of scientists used silicon (silicone) anodes instead of traditional toners. This approach has shown positive results, but the problem presented was that silicon expands and contracts during charging and discharging the battery.
To address this, the Samsung team has created a process for the development of silicon layer graphene cells that can be adapted to prevent the expansion of silicon.
"The graphene layers on the silicon surface keep the volume of silicon between the adjacent graphene layers. When the technique is combined with a lithium cobalt cathode, the silicon-free graphene carbide allows the energy storage cells to reach the volumetric energy densities of 972 and 700 Wh L-1 in the first and 200th cycles, respectively, 1,8 , 1,5 and XNUMX times higher prices than those of today's commercial lithium-ion batteries.
