Sandboxie, a program sandbox for the Windows operating system. The latest version of the application is Sandboxie 5.31.4 and was released on September 10, 2019.
It is the first version of Sandboxie that is available for free to everyone.
Sandboxie started as shareware for Windows. The purpose of the application is to run other applications and files in a sandbox on the current system.
Created by developer Ronen Tzur, it was later acquired by Invincea before the company was acquired by security company Sophos.
Sophos did not initially change the Sandboxie license when it acquired the development company.
But the company announced the change yesterday of the license on the official blog of the Sophos community. Revealed her plans to make Sandboxie an open source tool.
The new version of Sandboxie released last night by Sophos does not require an activation code and does not restrict access to features that were only available to users of the premium version.
In other words: all features of the premium version of Sandboxie as of today are free.
The paid version of the app supported many features that the free version did not. Among the most notable are: the ability to force programs to run in the sandbox, the ability to create and use multiple sandboxes on the system, but also the ability to run the same program in many different sandboxes.
It should be noted here that the application can no longer be downloaded directly from the official website.
Sophos has added a form to the download process that you must complete before enabling the download. The company promises that the information will not be used for marketing purposes.
What about customers who had paid for the app?
Those who have purchased a Sandboxie license should also update to the new version. What is essentially changing, according to the FAQ, is that customer support will now be provided by the community.
