The seven keys that control the World Wide Web

The title of the topic refers to a novel that develops ρίες conspiracy theories from those that many like to circulate. And yet, things are different and very specific in their case "Seven keys that control the Internet".

Keys

It's about real keys which are scattered throughout the planet and occupy it seven different people, to which they have been awarded ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), a US-based non-profit organization responsible for entering numeric addresses into and their translation into the normal web addresses we type every day, (eg www.iguru.gr).

Ο James ball, journalist of English The , made a special one interesting reportage, on what these are "Seven Keys to the Internet". For this reason, he was found in Los Angeles, its seat ICANN, where, in fact, he was fortunate to watch one of them "Key ceremonies" which take place every year under unprecedented security conditions of course, for obvious reasons.

But why these? "Seven keys" are important for it Internet security? In order to understand this better, one has to think about how important his work is ICANN, with regard to supervision and regulation of naming on the Internet and how valuable data is in the organization's database. The organization, therefore, controls the domain name system, our known DNS, which could simplistically claim that it is Internet version of a phone book, as it matches web addresses with numbers (i.e. IP Addresses). It is no exaggeration to say that if one could gain access to this δεδομένων του ICANN, θα μπορούσε πρακτικά να… check Somehow the Internet. Imagine a simple example, one hacker accessed and how it could be change number matches and URLs, sending on fake bank pages. And of course the corresponding examples could be endless...

From ICANN, they are quick to point out that, beyond naming, "They are not responsible for many issues related to the Internet, such as. financial transactions, control of Internet content, spam, gambling or data protection and privacy issues ”.

However, in order not to have so much control and so much responsibility in a single person as regards its responsibilities, ICANN has chosen seven people in seven separate regions of the world, giving them "Internet keys". It's about natural keys, which unlock seven safes scattered across the globe and within them "Smart" key cards. If these are put together, one is created "Master key" το οποίο είναι κάποιου είδους ς, ένα password θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε με άλλα λόγια, το οποίο επιτρέπει την πρόσβαση στη βάση δεδομένων του ICANN.

It is about a select expert group on security issues from around the world. Everyone has a tremendous background on Internet security issues and has worked for major international organizations. They have been selected based on their experience and geographic distribution as well no country may have more than one key.

Seven other people around the world have access to smartcards of a different type. It's about backup solutions which form a part of the code that is necessary for the reconstruction of the system in case something catastrophic happens.

Four times a year from 2010, two on the east and two on the west coast of the US, the seven key holders meet in special ceremony in which a new password is created, one new master key. Η security of the ceremony in fact it is too big and whoever is involved will have to go through a series of locked doors using codes and biometric hand scanners until they enter a room that is extremely safe…

Read it very interesting reportage of James Ball in the Guardian experience follow-up of such a ceremony of key holders and then view it following video created…
