Signal is asking users to help reconnect it to Iran. Signal offers communication between its users and is widely considered the most s platform as it focuses on privacy and end-to-end encryption.

The app is blocked in Iran last January, after seeing an increased popularity there. In light of the protests currently rocking the country, the απευθύνει στην παγκόσμια βάση χρηστών της, έκκληση για βοήθεια, για την υποστήριξη ενός ad-hoc δικτύου διακομιστών μεσολάβησης που θα μπορούσαν να υποστηρίξουν την υπηρεσία of privacy.

The new president of Signal, Ms. Meredith Whittaker, she said in one of her posts: “If you want and can, follow the instructions below to create a proxy server that will allow the in Iran to be connected to Signal. We hope this will help people in Iran start communicating on Signal, while we continue to explore additional techniques to circumvent censorship there.”

Proxies are basically intermediaries that come between clients (web users) and their origin servers. This setting allows requests to be forwarded (and sometimes fulfilled) by the proxy rather than the origin server. Proxies can be used for a variety of reasons, but in this case, they are being used to bypass the suffocating censorship measures implemented by the Iranian government.

Protests in Iran are rocking the country with police attempting to violently suppress them. The unrest is the result of an incident that took place just last week, when a 22-year-old girl, Mahsa Amini, died in the custody of Iran's "morality police" for not wearing the mandatory headscarf (hijab) properly.

Disputed accounts of Amini's violent death have shaken the country. The government claims the young woman suffered a heart attack and died of "natural causes" while in custody. However, widespread reports claim that she was beaten to death under the guise of "guidance".

If you want to help Signal achieve its goal, the company has provided step by step instructions for how to set up and run one of the proxies. Signal also asked users to spread the word and show solidarity with the effort by retweeting the #IRanASignalProxy.
