Where did Skype go? Windows 10 can run two types of applications: desktop apps ie Win32 applications and UWP applications ie Universal Platforms Windows applications.
Many of Microsoft's popular operating system applications have both versions. For example, the Minecraft has a Java version for use on desktops, but is also available as a UWP app from the Microsoft Store.
The same goes for Skype. Windows 10 users can use the Skype desktop application or the UWP application that is installed by default. But if you try to download the Skype desktop application today, you'll find that Microsoft has removed it from the download page.
Microsoft withdrew Skype from the official download page because it was discovered that the deskop application has a security flaw. The flaw exists in how the application looks for and installs the updates.
The application, as we mentioned in previous publication uses a archive DLL that is stored in the Temp folder of each current user. So since that particular file exists in a user's folder, anyone with user rights can read and write files to it.
Microsoft has been made aware of the problem, and has decided to pull the app installer from the official Skype download page. THE company but it enables Windows 10 users to use the UWP app.
Skype Alternatives
At present there are two alternatives. We mentioned this one and it is about installing the UWP version available in the Microsoft Store. The second is to use a different messaging application, such as Discord or Slack.
For users of Windows 7 who are banned using Skype, you can use it as long as you have an 7.40 or an earlier version. This is an older version according to the Microsoft forum that is not affected by the security vulnerability.
Unfortunately, this version does not exist on the official Skype website. You will need the offline installer that can install it 7.40 version. Beware of Scams, because it is possible for some to use the information for malicious purposes.
It should also be mentioned that the current Skype desktop application is in the 8.15 version, which means that the older version we recommend will not have all the features of the latest version.
