Finally, basic applications such as Chromium, LibreOffice, or Firefox will only be available as Snaps.

Looking at the slide attached below, going from Unity 7 desktop to Unity 8 will be sometime between Ubuntu 16.10 and Ubuntu 17.04.
At the moment, Unity 8 is available in the Ubuntu 16.04 XTS Xenius Xerus repos as a preview of the technology, but it still needs a lot of work.
