SoftEther VPN Project develops and distributes SoftEther VPN, a free open source program for multiple open source VPNs. It is an academic project from the University of Tsukuba, and is distributed under the Apache 2.0 License.
What is SoftEther VPN?
SoftEther VPN ("SoftEther" stands for "Ethernet Software") is one of the most powerful and easy-to-use multi-protocol VPN software in the world. Runs on Windows, Linux, Mac, FreeBSD and Solaris.
It is open source, so you can use it for personal or commercial use, free of charge.
It has an OpenVPN Server cloning feature, but it is faster than OpenVPN. It also supports Microsoft SSTP VPN for Windows Vista / 7/8, so you do not have to pay dearly for a Windows Server license that gives you remote access VPN functionality.
The software can also be used to implement BYOD (Bring your own device) by businesses. If you have smartphones, tablets or laptops, the SoftEther VPN L2TP / IPsec server feature will help you set up a remote access VPN from your local network. SoftEther L2TP VPN Server is compatible with Windows, Mac, iOS and Android operating systems.
Free SoftEther VPN is not only an alternative VPN server to existing VPN products (OpenVPN, IPsec and MS-SSTP), but also has an original powerful SSL-VPN protocol for you to bypass any type of firewall. The highly optimized SoftEther VPN SSL-VPN protocol has very fast performance, low latency and firewall strength.
The built-in NAT Transmitter traverses every annoying firewall of your network administrator.
You can set up your own VPN server behind your company firewall or NAT, and you can access that VPN server on the corporate private network from your home or mobile phone without changing your firewall settings.
Any firewalls cannot detect SoftEther VPN transfer packets as VPNs because they use Ethernet over HTTPS for camouflage.
SoftEther VPN is free software because it was developed as research Daiyuu Nobori's Master Thesis at Tsukuba University in Japan.
