The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest honor that can be bestowed in the US on a civilian and is awarded to “individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the welfare, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or some other important community, public or private efforts," the White House said in a statement.
Jobs founded Apple in April 1976 and since then it has become one of the largest companies in the world. It helped launch many technology products that became cultural touchstones, including the Mac, the iPod, and the iPhone. He died on October 5, 2011.
In its statement, the White House praised Jobs' creative approach to his various endeavors.
"Steve Jobs was co-founder, CEO and chairman of Apple, Inc., CEO of Pixar and held a leadership role at The Walt Disney Company," the White House said.
"His vision, imagination and creativity led to inventions that changed and continue to change the way the world communicates, as well as transforming the computer, music, film and wireless industries."
The award will be presented on July 7.
