Bogota, Colombia – In the capital of a country notorious for drug trafficking, Colombian police, acting on a tip from an informant, stopped a Chevy minivan leaving Bogota's El Dorado Airport. In the back of the vehicle were dozens of boxes filled with illegally imported smartphones, all high-end, such as iPhones and Samsung Galaxy S4, Huffington Post reports.
The seizure took place in the early hours of September 26, 2012. The boxes contained over 400 Samsung, LG and BlackBerry phones, along with their instruction manuals and chargers. When the police did a cursory check on the phones, their screens displayed the names and logos of two American companies, AT&T and Verizon.
Η search of their serial numbers in an American database held by the Police showed that the devices were "clean". However, Colombia's National Police said the phones were clearly stolen in the United States. Intercepted conversations by the Colombian traffickers revealed that the phones had been picked up by someone with stolen electronics in Miami, and then flown to Bogota.
