The European Union will hold a meeting with technology and social media companies a "stress test" to see how they are handling disinformation ahead of the elections in Germany next month.
European Commission officials have invited tech companies including X, Meta, Snap, TikTok, Google, Microsoft and LinkedIn to a meeting on Jan. 31, according to multiple news outlets. During the meeting, European Commission officials will ask the companies how they would respond to different scenarios that could affect the upcoming election, from artificial intelligence impersonations to disinformation campaigns, according to Bloomberg.
This stress test will show whether tech companies are complying with the EU's Digital Services Act, which requires companies to have safeguards and a protocol in place to combat disinformation and illegal content on their platforms.
This test will take place ahead of early federal elections in Germany in February. The results could have major implications for the wider EU, as Germany is one of the largest member states.
The EU will closely examine how tech companies comply with the DSA (Digital Services Act) now, after Romania, a member of the union, annulled the results of the first round of its presidential election last year following evidence of Russian interference, which they believe may have been enhanced by a TikTok algorithm, and the documentation of 85.000 attempted cyberattacks on election websites.
Elon Musk and X have already played a role in these upcoming elections in Germany. Musk recently interviewed Alice Weidel, leader of the German far-right AfD party and candidate in the upcoming German elections, on X.
This news comes just a day after President Donald Trump took aim at the way EU regulators treat US tech companies, including Google, Meta and Apple, two of which have been invited to this stress test.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Donald Trump said that regulation of US-based technology companies by EU authorities was “a form of taxation”.
