Phoronix Comparison: Linux outperforms Windows 11

Phoronix compared various along with Windows 11 and apparently Linux won the points.

Most of the comparisons that exist on the internet refer to hardware and software performance comparisons running on the same operating system . Comparisons between operating systems unfortunately don't come around that often, but when they do they can provide a good one about how good, or not, a particular operating system is compared to another.

The latest Phoronix comparison shows us that Linux outperforms Windows 11 on most test points. Phoronix, for those who haven't come across the site before, has been around since 2004. It's a site that focuses on Linux hardware and other Linux.

The site ran a lot of tests after the release of Intel's high-end Core i9 12900K Alder Lake processor.

With the initial release of this flagship processor, Windows 11 outperformed Linux versions, (testing in November 2021), and this was a result of missing Linux kernel patches for that processor (according to the author of test).

In the interim though, the Linux kernel received performance fixes for Alder Lake and the author decided to run the benchmarks again to see if the situation has improved.

On this machine we tested Windows 11 Pro, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS again but after installing the stable Linux kernel 5.18 and finally Intel's Clear Linux 36580.

The author did a lot of testing for various benchmarks on all four operating systems. No system was always on top, but Windows 11 Pro performed worse overall in most tests. While at least one of the three Linux systems did better than Windows 11 Pro on most benchmarks, only on some of the benchmarks did Windows 11 Pro outperform all three Linux systems.

Some points of comparison had rather strange results. Take the test with ParaView 5.10.1 for example: Windows 11 Pro had the worst performance score in three of the four benchmark runs, but came out on top in the last one. Another interesting observation is that Ubuntu 22.04 LTS without the stable 5.18 kernel patch did better in some areas than Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Linux kernel 5.18.

In the average of all tests, Clear View came first, Ubuntu 22.04+Linux 5.18 second, Ubuntu 22.04 without the linux kernel update third, and Windows 11 Pro last.

If nothing else, this assessment highlights that Linux performance on systems with Intel's Core i9 12900K processor has improved over the past ten months. It's a good development of course.

Windows 11 Pro didn't perform too well on many benchmarks, but performance is only part of the equation. Other factors also play a role in choosing an operating system.
