Artificial intelligence: when the numbers don't add up...

Artificial intelligence companies like OpenAI have been quick to reveal plans to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on data centers, but they haven't shown us how they will generate revenue to cover all those expenses.

Now, consulting firm Bain & Co. estimates the deficit could be much larger than originally estimated.

Bloomberg:

By 2030, artificial intelligence companies will need $2 trillion in combined annual revenue to fund the computing power needed to meet projected demand, Bain said in its annual Global Technology Report published Tuesday.

However, their revenue is likely to fall by $800 billion from that threshold as efforts to monetize services like ChatGPT fall short of spending requirements for data centers and related infrastructure, Bain reports.

The report is expected to raise further questions about the valuations and business model of the AI industry.

The growing popularity of services like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, as well as AI efforts from companies around the globe, means that demand for computing capacity and energy is growing at a very rapid pace.

But the revenue generated by AI and the ability of companies to generate additional revenue from AI are not growing at the same rate.
