A new HBO documentary directed by Emmy nominee Cullen Hoback claims to have revealed the true identity of Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto. Such as he says in Politico, Hoback "won public acclaim with his 'Q: Into the Storm' series that exposed the originators of the QAnon conspiracy theory."
The bitcoin documentary is scheduled to air next Wednesday.
The revelation of Satoshi as the creator of bitcoin threatens to raise huge questions, including his possible complicity in crimes involving the use of Bitcoin. It could also establish him as one of the richest people in the world: Satoshi himself is estimated to control around 1,1 million Bitcoins, but it is unclear whether he still has access to the cryptographic keys to his fortune. If he has, it would put his net worth at $66 billion at current valuations.
What is very interesting, is that as the documentary's release date approaches, a number of high-value wallets from the "Satoshi era" have been activated for the first time since 2009.
According to Bitcoin Magazine, about 250 bitcoins — worth about $15 million at Thursday's bitcoin exchange rate of $60.754 to the dollar — were withdrawn over the past two weeks. Although the digital currency is not officially linked to the wallets used by Satoshi Nakamoto, it has been dormant since the early days of Bitcoin, when the cryptocurrency was worth almost nothing. Wallet creators would certainly be Satoshi's first collaborators.
The true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto remains one of the biggest mysteries of recent years.
