Bad news for all Tormail users. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has a full copy of a Tormail server and uses it in its investigations.
According to court documents that appeared recently, the FBI has cloned the entire e-mail service database while investigating the case Freedom Hosting.
In August of 2013, when the FBI confiscated Tor servers at Freedom Hosting, the federations gained access to each record of any anonymous website that existed on Freedom Hosting servers, including TorMail (a service that allows anonymous upload and receiving email).
New items revealed by Wired report that these files are now being used in cybercrime investigations.
It is unknown at this time how many TorMail users or data is in the hands of the FBI, but Wired says the FBI knows everything.
As reported on the TorMail website, managers refused to deliver information to the FBI, even when they were presented to them by a court order. But if all of the above is true, cloning the server, those who use the service can forget about anonymity.
