Toshiba recalled 15,5 million transformers

Dynabook Americas, the company formerly known as Toshiba, recalled 15,5 million laptop power adapters due to possible explosion and fire hazards.toshiba

The company said it received 679 reports of AC adapters overheating or catching fire, including 43 reports of minor burns. So consumers should immediately stop using the transformers and contact the company for a free replacement.

The recall applies to AC adapters sold alongside Toshiba personal notebook computers and sold separately, with date codes from April 2008 to December 2012. These adapters were manufactured in China and there are more than 60 models involved in the recall. The company has published a website listing the model numbers and serial numbers.

Gatner points out that the transformers are for "very old models" so "a very small percentage of the population uses them."

The article cites data from Gartner showing that while Toshiba once led the laptop market, today it is at about 1%. "Today, Lenovo dominates the category with 25%, followed by HP (22%), Dell (17%) and Apple (9%).
