According to the of the recall, the issue affects lithium-ion batteries found in the Portege, Satellite, and Tecra models. The battery manufacturer is Panasonic.

All laptops sold in the US and Canada between June 2011 and January 2016, and manufactured in China and Japan are affected by the issue. The laptops were sold primarily through Office Depot, Staples, Toshibadirect.com, but also through other electronics outlets .

Toshiba says the batteries of these laptops may overheat or melt, damaging their owners. To date, four such cases have been reported.

Company representatives report that 39 laptop models may have been affected. The company has published a page where it provides instructions on how you can find out if your laptop affected by this issue or not.

Toshiba has an automated tool that can detect whether a computer is affected by checking its serial number and a portion of its battery number. This informs the user if his / her laptop is included for revocation.

The company reports that all batteries have trouble battery numbers starting with G71C (G71C *******).

The recall concerns new laptops that still have a warranty, but also users who had such a battery and replaced it even after the warranty.

The company also says the simplest way to avoid problems is to remove the battery and run the computer directly from the charger.
