Toyota announced yesterday that it is embarking on partnerships with its University Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to create a joint research center.
Researchers there will focus on artificial intelligence and robotics, but not in the same way that other carmakers have done in recent years.
"Toyota believes that the opportunities for improving daily living through artificial intelligence are limitless, with significant potential for the development of rescue intelligent vehicles and robot to improve life", The company told the NYT.
The head of the project is Gill Pratt, who until now was the director of the proletterτος Defense Advanced Research Projects US agency (DARPA Robotics). Stanford professor Fei Fei-Li is considered a special personality in the world of computing, and he will lead the new Stanford lab.
With this new effort, Toyota competes with car companies that have already started similar projects: Audi, Honda, Mercedes, and Tesla, are already running their own self-driving development programs.
