The Trump administration is reportedly considering an executive order to create a task force to review advanced artificial intelligence models before they are released to the public. The change comes after concerns about the powerful model Anthropic's Mythos and its cyber-dynamic capabilities, with officials weighing whether the government should gain early access to pioneering models without necessarily preventing their publication.
The New York Times they mention:
In meetings last week, White House officials briefed executives from Anthropic, Google and OpenAI on some of those plans, people familiar with the discussions said. The task force is likely to consider a range of oversight approaches, the officials said. But a review process could be similar to one being developed in Britain, which has tasked various government agencies with ensuring that artificial intelligence models meet certain safety standards, people in the tech industry and government said.
The discussions mark a sharp reversal in the Trump administration's approach to artificial intelligence. Since returning to office last year, Trump has been a strong advocate of the technology, which he has said is crucial to winning the geopolitical competition against China.
Among other moves, he quickly rescinded a Biden administration regulatory process that required developers to conduct security assessments and report on artificial intelligence models with potential military applications.
“We’re going to make this industry absolutely top-notch, because there’s a beautiful baby being born right now,” Trump said of artificial intelligence at an event in July. “We’ve got to grow this baby and let it thrive. We can’t stop it. We can’t stop it with politics. We can’t stop it with stupid rules.” Trump left room for some rules, but added that “they have to be smarter than the technology itself.”
The White House wants to avoid any political fallout from a catastrophic AI-assisted cyberattack, people in the technology industry and government said. The administration is also evaluating whether new AI models could yield cyber capabilities that could be useful to the Pentagon and U.S. intelligence agencies, they said.
To get ahead of models like Mythos, some officials are pushing for a review system that would give the government early access to AI but not prevent its release, people briefed on the talks said.
Although the press releases will range from very select to rare, I said I'd pass...because sometimes the editors hide.
