After breaking many accounts high profile on Twitter, the company said it believes it all started with a “coordinated attack social engineering".
“We have detected what we believe to be a coordinated social engineering attack targeting our employees with access in internal systems and tools”, Reported The company.
“We know they used this access to take control of several extremely famous (and verified) accounts and tweet on their behalf. We are looking into what other malicious activity they may have carried out or what information may have gained access. "
Twitter reported that as soon as it detected the incidents, it immediately locked all affected accounts and removed the tweets posted by the attackers.
The company went on to confirm that it has limited functionality to more accounts, even those that do not appear to have been compromised, as it continues its investigations.
"It's annoying, but it's an important step in reducing the risk. "Most of the functions have been restored, but we may take further action and we will let you know if we do," the company said.
