The US wants to criminalize Streaming movies and music

We lose it ; While the SOPA and PIPA bills have ceased to be a threat (or so they like to believe), the Obama administration is still determined to outlaw the streaming of movies and music, turning it into a felony. The Ministry of Justice argues that this change is necessary to adequately prosecute unauthorized streaming services. In addition, the government has requested permanent funding to be used to crack down on foreign websites such as Pirate Bay under "diplomatic and commercial pressure."

Sad Pirate Streaming

Yesterday, the House Judiciary Committee discussed on the penalties and remedies that can be used for online copyright violations. One of the speakers was David Bitkower, Assistant Attorney General, who filed the wishes of the Obama administration.

After major successes such as the shutdown of Megaupload and the prosecution of IMAGiNE team members, Bitkower explained the evolving of copyright holders.

From the illegal σε δισκέτες στη δεκαετία του '90, μέχρι σήμερα οι νέες τεχνολογίες φέρνουν νέες απειλές, υποστήριξε. Με την άνοδο της ευρυζωνικής πρόσβασης η πειρατεία έχει επιδεινωθεί και η πιο πρόσφατη is the fight against illegal streaming services.

The problem of the Ministry of Justice and the holders of copyright is for these services is more difficult to prosecute. Technically, continuous flow does not count as distribution, but as a public execution, which can be charged, legally, only as a misdemeanor. To put it simply, there can be no persecution as nothing is stored in the computer's hard disk (hard drive) but only in the buffer (cache) for playback.

The Obama administration tried to correct this 2012 by implementing the SOPA and PIPA bills, but after the public outcry, it put them in the drawer.

In addition to criminalizing Streaming, Bitkower also called for funds to support international anti-piracy activities. In recent years the Ministry of Justice has trained police forces abroad to deal with copyright infringement.

The international program helped close Megaupload, but it could also target Pirate Bay with "diplomatic and commercial pressure." According to Torrentfreak, the problem facing the United States there is that there is not much they can do, as all indications are that the Pirates political party is directly linked to Pirate Bay.
