Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark Test Drive

Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark, released on October 19, with changes that may upset some friends of the distribution. Canonical's new operating system leaves the well-known Unity interface for GNOME 3.

Gnome 3.26.1 is the Artful Aardvark desktop, and will run through the Wayland display server.Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark

If you want to use the X11 display server, instead of Wayland there is the option "Ubuntu to Xorg" via the GDM (GNOME Display Manager) login screen. Among the options will be the vanilla of GNOME 3.26 session without the modifications made by Canonical, but also the old Unity desktop.

I tried the new distribution, via USB in its Live version. The boot was very fast and gave me the well-known screen of choosing between Live test, instant installation, or an OEM installation, with all the necessary drivers from the beginning. With the Live version I did not encounter any particular problem with the drivers that my computer needs. The Canonical operating system located them all and they worked without problems from the beginning.

I encountered the first issue when I tried to add Greek to write this article. Adding an additional language was a game:But the change of language from the keyboard was disappointing… I remembered that Gnome DE has the Gnome Tweak Tool, which allows more language switching options, but this application is not pre-installed in the new distribution.

So from launchpad.net I had to find the latest version of gnome-tweak-tool and install it.

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/artful/amd64/gnome-tweak-tool/3.24.0-0ubuntu2

Of course after that language change was a gameAs for the Dock now. I never liked adding the dock to the left side of Ubuntu.

Canonical in this distribution has used the specially modified Dash to Dock extension which it renamed Ubuntu Dock. This Shell add-on has easy Dock placement switching where it suits you best. Apparently the Ubuntu development company has worked hard to create an environment similar to Unity περιβάλλον

The setting is located in Settings - Dock

The kernel used by the new Ubuntu is in version 4.13.x. It should be noted that the Linux Kernel 4.13 is not an LTS (Long Term Support) version but by the time the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS version is released, the Linux Kernel 4.14 will have been released.

Επιλέξτε το Ubuntu στο Xorg και tie yourself up

Let me mention some applications included in the new Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark: Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, Shotwell, Rhythbox and others. Canonical still doesn't include GIMP by default, but it's easy enough to install using the utility Ubuntu Software.

Enough Ubuntu in one day, time to go back to Debian…
