The Ubuntu development team announced today the availability of the first beta version of the upcoming Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver series, but only for opt-in flavors.
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) has been developing for a long time, mainly due to the Meltdown and Specter security holes. Today, however, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Budgie and Ubuntu Kylin for its Chinese OS fans Canonical.
Lubuntu and Ubuntu Studio flavors are not available on this beta, but we hope to see them next month, 5 April, when a Ubuntu development team will announce the Final Beta.
As for the new features, the Kubuntu 18.04 LTS Beta features the latest, LTS surface environment work KDE Plasma 5.12 by default, along with KDE 17.12.2 apps, as well as other updated apps.
The Ubuntu Budgie 18.04 LTS Beta seems to have several improvements and new features, such as better font processing options for Korean and Chinese languages, emoji color support, better shortcuts, new preset Budgie applets and a whole new GTK + theme.
On the other hand, the Xubuntu 18.04 LTS Beta comes without GTK theming tool, but with updated Greybird GTK+ theme, Xfce PulseAudio plugin, status notification plugin, Atril document viewer, Engrampa archive manager, MATE Calculator and new default Wallpaper.
All of these versions run with the latest Linux 4.15 kernel. The same Kernel will also run the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) when it launches next month on April 26.
