Ubuntu 20.04 LTS end of support and the difference with Windows

Canonical has issued a warning to users of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and states that anyone using it should upgrade to Ubuntu LTS 24.04, which will be supported until 2029. For users who need to continue using this version of Ubuntu, there is another option that will allow them to use it until April 2030.

The second option is Expanded Security Maintenance and is available as part of the Ubuntu Pro subscription.

Enterprises with multiple machines will have to pay, while individual users who want to enable ESM can do so free on up to five computers by following the instructions on its website Ubuntu Advantage (you will need an account).

Here is the big difference with Windows, that if someone needs extended support they have to pay, business or simple home user.

Businesses also have the option to purchase the Legacy Support add-on, which extends support through April 2032.2024 11 25 9 06 17

It is important to mention that Expanded Security Maintenance will stick to the stated end date and will not be repeated as was the case with Windows XP where support continued to be extended because businesses were not ready to upgrade.

For this reason, those using Ubuntu should upgrade to the latest as soon as possible.

Canonical says:

"It's important to plan your next steps. Running Ubuntu 20.04 without ESM means you will no longer receive security updates after April 2025. Unpatched CVEs could expose your systems to security breaches.

For those operating in industries such as financial services, healthcare or telecommunications, timely application of security patches is essential to meet compliance standards. If you're running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, it's time to think about your next step: upgrade to the latest Ubuntu LTS or get ESM coverage through Ubuntu Pro until 2032.”
