Ubuntu 20.04 LTS now in the Microsoft Store

Canonical has released the latest version of Ubuntu a few hours ago. The company just added distribution to Microsoft Store for Windows 10 users who want to install it on their system.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS comes with many additions and security enhancements, such as Secure Boot for protection against low-level attacks and rootkit.

Additionally, this is the first version to feature Fast ID Online, or FIDO, to power universal use of multi-factor without the need for any codes in the operating system.

Another notable addition is the WireGuard VPN, which is pre-installed on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, but will also support the 18.04 LTS distribution version, according to Canonical.

Of course, anyone can upgrade to the latest version of Ubuntu manually, but the Microsoft Store version makes it much easier for users using the Windows Subsystem for Linux to install it.

Windows Subsystem for Linux, or WSL, allows users to run a Linux distribution over Windows 10, and Microsoft has been able to make significant improvements to its existing application over the years. The upcoming Windows 10 feature update called May 2020 Update will include the new Windows Subsystem for Linux 2 by default.

“Ubuntu 20.04 on Windows allows you to τε το Ubuntu and run utilities of commands, such as bash, ssh, git, apt, and more,” Microsoft says in the release notes for the new distribution on the Microsoft Store.

What you should know is that Ubuntu 20.04 from the Microsoft Store cannot be installed on Windows 10 in S mode (Windows 10 S). This particular version of the Microsoft operating system is limited to installing applications from the Microsoft Store only, but the Ubuntu distribution is not currently supported.
