Ubuntu 24.10 is now available for download after six months of development. This is the 40th release of Ubuntu since 2004 (yes it's been 20 years).
The latest version brings many changes and new features, such as the recent version of GNOME 47, more pre-installed tools for developers and better management of snaps for background updates.
As a short-term release, Ubuntu 24.10 will be supported with updates for 9 months. So those who install it will have to upgrade again in July 2025 to continue receiving updates. The next major update, Ubuntu 25.04, will be released in April 2025.
The 40th release since the release of the Ubuntu distribution in 2004, it comes with many features to honor Ubuntu 4.10 “Warty Warthog”: it brings the first startup sound on connection; a brown accent color and a remastered version of Ubuntu's first wallpaper.
It runs on the latest Linux 6.11 kernel, while the graphics capabilities are optimized with the new version of Mesa 24.2.3. NVIDIA driver selection is now in 550.x and 560.x versions.
Linux 6.11 improves hardware support for new and existing devices, including ARM and RISC-V chipsets. The EXT4 file system shows a large performance improvement in some tasks, while newer AMD systems will be more efficient.
